BlueActionAA contributes to EuroGEO workshop on bridging marine data and policy action

Project Description

BlueActionAA was selected among more than 200 initiatives to participate in the EuroGEO Marine & Coastal Action Group Workshop (6–7 July 2026, Geneva). The event focused on strengthening the “data to intelligence” value chain and improving the translation of marine data into policy and societal impact.

BlueActionAA actively participated in the EuroGEO Marine & Coastal Action Group Workshop, a high-level event dedicated to enhancing how marine and coastal data are transformed into actionable knowledge for decision-making. The workshop gathered leading initiatives with the aim of identifying gaps and priorities in the data-to-policy continuum.

During the event, BlueActionAA contributed through a project pitch and participation in breakout discussions addressing systemic challenges in the marine data ecosystem. A key output of the workshop was a participant poll highlighting priority issues that hinder effective impact generation.

The results confirmed a major structural gap between scientific outputs and policy uptake. The most critical challenge identified by participants was the difficulty of translating data and project results into concrete policy action, reaching approximately 60% relevance in the poll.

Other significant barriers included the lack of clarity regarding policy-makers’ needs (around 45%), which limits the ability of projects to align their outputs with decision-making processes.

Fragmentation across initiatives – driven by the absence of common standards and best practices – was highlighted as another key issue (around 50%), alongside the limited uptake of project results and their insufficient societal impact (also around 50%).

In addition, participants pointed to challenges in stakeholder engagement, including user fatigue and a low perceived value of participation (around 40%), emphasizing the need for more user-centric approaches and clearer benefits.

These findings strongly reinforce the strategic positioning of BlueActionAA. The project is designed to bridge the gap between knowledge generation and action, supporting the uptake of results, improving clustering across initiatives, and enhancing policy relevance. The timing of this input is particularly valuable, as BlueActionAA is currently in its pre-implementation phase, with activities expected to start in late 2026.

The workshop also opened new opportunities for collaboration and alignment with international initiatives, including engagement with GEO Blue Planet and AquaWatch communities, among others.

Overall, participation in the EuroGEO workshop strengthens BlueActionAA’s role as a key actor in improving the marine data value chain, ensuring that scientific knowledge is effectively translated into impactful solutions for society and policy.
