Community-Led Pilot Action Open Call (BAAC-01): Webinar on Marine Restoration 12 March 2026

Project Description
Community-Led Pilot Action Open Call  (BAAC-01): Webinar on Marine Restoration

  • Date: 12 March 2026
  • Time: 10h00 – 11h00 AM CET
  • Place: Online

This thematic webinar will introduce the Community-Led Pilot Action Open Call (BAAC-01) with a specific focus on marine restoration, as part of the BlueActionAA contribution to the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”. Participants will gain an overview of the BlueActionAA project, its role within the Mission Ocean framework, and the objectives of the open call aimed at supporting innovative, community-driven solutions for restoring marine ecosystems.

The webinar will showcase concrete use case examples of marine restoration initiatives, offering inspiration and practical insights from research and real-world experiences. In addition, the session will provide clear guidance on the technical assistance available to applicants, explaining how tailored support can help develop robust, well-designed pilot actions aligned with the call’s objectives.

The event will conclude with an interactive Q&A session, followed by information on next steps, key dates, and how to submit an Expression of Interest. This webinar is designed for potential applicants interested in leading impactful marine restoration actions and engaging with the BlueActionAA open call.

Mogens Flindt
Associate Professor at University of Southern Denmark

Mogens R. Flindt (male), professor, scientific leader of the ecology group at SDU, is a researcher in coastal marine ecology. He is an expert in bridging coastal ecosystem pressure, nature protection and restoration, mathematical modelling, GIS, marine ecology and quantification of ecosystem services and functioning. Mogens has been working with human impact on estuaries and coastal areas for more than 40 years and has a huge scientific group and international network. His marine group is an essential partner in the National Centre of Marine Restoration with responsibility for eelgrass, coastal realignment, and sand-capping. The group has restored about 10 ha of eelgrass meadows, 65 ha of mussel reefs, 12 ha of stone reefs and been sand-capping about 4-5 ha of estuarine areas. His group has already created seascape/mosaic habitats in Vejle Fjord and expect that combining these restorations will provide extra ecosystem services, which will be the next aim to study. Usually citizen science is always a part of the restoration setup with task as: high frequent water sampling, supporting eelgrass transplanting, visual observations etc.

Ana Sousa
Assistant Professor at University of Aveiro

Ana Sousa is an Assistant Professor at CESAM – Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, Department of Biology, University of Aveiro (Portugal), specializing in marine and coastal wetland restoration, blue carbon, and ecosystem resilience. She contributes to several European projects focused on restoring coastal ecosystems for climate mitigation, biodiversity recovery, and through Nature-based Solutions. Her work integrates scientific research with practical implementation, including seagrass and salt marsh restoration, carbon stock and flux assessment, and stakeholder engagement in coastal communities. She currently coordinates the FCT funded project BLUE-REWET and, at institutional level, the Horizon Europe project REWRITE and the Interreg project CAPTA, advancing innovative approaches to rewilding, restoration and blue carbon management. In this webinar, concrete marine restoration case studies from research and field implementation will be showcased, highlighting lessons learned, challenges faced, and scalable solutions.
