Strategic funding approach strengthens Irish Arctic research profile through BlueActionAA

Project Description

The BlueActionAA project was presented at the Network of Arctic Researchers in Ireland (NARI) Annual General Meeting in Galway, Ireland, highlighting how the project is using the International Polar Year-5 (IPY-5) framework to raise the domestic profile of Irish polar and Arctic research.

The presentation demonstrated how the project positions Ireland strategically ahead of transition calls expected in January, employing a stacked funding approach that connects national priorities with IPY-5 and Horizon Europe mechanisms to create clear entry points for Irish actors in Arctic and polar research.

The community-led cascade call was showcased as a key instrument to mobilize local stakeholders, pilot innovative initiatives, and demonstrate readiness for larger transition projects. By providing financial support and technical assistance to Irish communities and organizations working on ecosystem restoration and ocean protection, BlueActionAA helps build the track record and capacity needed to compete successfully for larger-scale Horizon Europe funding opportunities.

This strategic approach allows Irish researchers, NGOs, and local authorities to engage with international Arctic research priorities while advancing domestic objectives related to ecosystem restoration and the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030.”

The presentation at NARI’s AGM reinforces BlueActionAA’s commitment to supporting Irish participation in Arctic and Atlantic research networks. By connecting community-led initiatives with broader European frameworks, the project helps raise Ireland’s profile in polar research and creates pathways for Irish stakeholders to contribute to and benefit from international Arctic cooperation.

The Network of Arctic Researchers in Ireland (NARI) brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in Arctic and polar research, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange within Ireland’s Arctic research community.
